WatchFence

Privacy Policy

Effective and last updated: October 18, 2026

Scope and operator

WatchFence is a Chrome extension developed and operated by Sho Builds It. This policy describes version 1.8.1. Contact: [email protected]. WatchFence does not use the Google-connected features described in the website’s separate policy for private tools.

Single purpose: WatchFence limits viewing of ordinary YouTube videos according to daily time windows in your computer’s local time.

Permissions and why they are needed

  • declarativeNetRequest: to send page loads on YouTube addresses to the extension’s own rules page outside the allowed times, and to allow them inside the allowed times.
  • alarms: to re-check the rules at 07:30, 09:00, 18:00 and 22:00 and every 30 seconds.
  • Access to youtube.com, www.youtube.com, m.youtube.com, gaming.youtube.com, youtu.be, www.youtu.be, youtube-nocookie.com and www.youtube-nocookie.com: to read the address of open YouTube pages, to pause playback on pages that are not allowed, and to check a video’s channel through YouTube’s oEmbed endpoint (see below).
  • Access to music.youtube.com: to read, inside the YouTube Music page, which kind of item is playing (for example a song or an official music video), and to pause and skip items that are not allowed at the current time.

WatchFence does not request the storage, cookies, history, tabs or identity permissions and does not read pages on other websites.

Information processed on your computer

WatchFence checks the address of YouTube pages you open (for example whether it is a Shorts page, a search page or an ordinary video) and compares it with the current local time. On YouTube Music it reads the item type that the YouTube Music page already contains. These checks run in your browser. Their results are not saved by WatchFence and are not sent to Sho Builds It.

Information sent to YouTube (oEmbed)

Only between 18:00 and 22:00 local time, when an ordinary video page (youtube.com/watch?v=… or youtu.be/…) is opened or still open, WatchFence asks YouTube which channel published that video, so that only the selected channel is allowed. It sends a request for each such video (reusing the answer while the extension’s background process keeps running) to:

https://www.youtube.com/oembed?format=json&url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<video ID>

  • What is sent: the video ID inside that address. Cookies are not included. As with any web request, YouTube (Google) also receives your IP address and standard browser request headers.
  • What is used: only the channel address in YouTube’s reply.
  • When it is not sent: from 07:30 to 09:00, outside 18:00–22:00, for Shorts, live, embedded and playlist addresses, and for YouTube Music checks.

Google’s handling of these requests is governed by the Google Privacy Policy. In the Chrome Web Store privacy disclosure this processing is declared as web history.

Storage and retention

WatchFence has no account and keeps no history. The channel result for a video is kept only in the extension’s memory and disappears when Chrome stops the extension’s background process. When a video from the selected channel is allowed, Chrome holds a temporary allow rule containing that video’s address in its session rules; WatchFence removes these rules at 22:00, and Chrome discards them when it restarts.

Sharing

Sho Builds It does not operate a server for WatchFence and receives no data from it. WatchFence contains no advertising, analytics or tracking code and does not sell, transfer or use data for purposes unrelated to its single purpose. Apart from the oEmbed requests to YouTube described above, it sends no data to third parties. Installation and updates through the Chrome Web Store are handled by Google under its own policies.

The use of information received by WatchFence adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
