Menu Bar Pomodoro
Support
A focus and break timer in your Mac’s menu bar. Mac App Store release is in preparation; the current candidate requires an Apple silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later.
Start, pause and resume
Left-click the hourglass in the menu bar to start, pause or resume. Right-click it (or Control-click) for Settings, Analytics, End Session and Quit. The app uses the menu bar and has no Dock window.
Settings controls focus, break and long-break durations, sessions before a long break and automatic starts. Duration changes apply to the next session. Paused time is excluded; sleep counts as elapsed time. Analytics shows local focus totals, not online tracking.
Back up or restore
Open Settings → Data. Export Backup creates a JSON backup. Export Sessions creates a CSV of saved sessions for a spreadsheet. Choose where to save each file.
Import Backup accepts this app’s exported JSON format, not a CSV or its internal history file. Check the Replace confirmation carefully: import replaces history, settings and the current session. Export a backup first if you need to keep them. Unfinished sessions restore paused; sessions already completed at the saved checkpoint remain completed.
When moving from an earlier local build to the Store version, export a backup from the local build and quit it before importing into the Store version. Start Fresh creates separate empty history; it does not delete the local build’s data.
Notifications and common issues
To receive completion alerts, enable Notifications in Settings and allow them in macOS System Settings → Notifications. Check Focus settings if banners do not appear. Sound is controlled separately.
If the timer will not start, finish the history setup prompt or review any storage error. For unreadable history, Import Backup can restore a valid exported backup and keeps the unreadable original as a separate local copy. If no backup is available, contact support before deleting files. If saving fails, resolve the storage problem and use Retry Save.
Remove local data
There is no Delete All button. The following removes this app’s history, settings, current session and unreadable-history recovery copies. Export a backup first only if you want to retain a copy.
- Quit Menu Bar Pomodoro from its menu. Quit any earlier local build too.
- In Finder, choose Go → Go to Folder and paste the appropriate app-data folder below.
- Move that MenuBarPomodoro folder to Trash. Do not remove unrelated folders or the entire Library or Containers directory. Permanent removal requires emptying those items from Trash when you are ready.
Store version:
~/Library/Containers/com.shobuildsit.menubarpomodoro/Data/Library/Application Support/MenuBarPomodoro/
Earlier non-sandboxed local build:
~/Library/Application Support/MenuBarPomodoro/
Finder may display a friendly app name for a container. If the expected folder is not present, contact support instead of guessing. On a later launch, the app can create fresh data. Removing the application alone does not reliably remove these folders.
Delete any JSON/CSV exports separately from the locations you chose. Copies in Trash, Time Machine, cloud storage or other backups follow those services’ retention controls. Dismiss existing notifications from Notification Center separately if needed.
Contact
Include your macOS version, app version and a short description of the problem. Do not send passwords or a full backup unless it is needed and you choose to share it.
